Travelers from New York can now fly directly via chartered flights to Havana in what is seen as the latest easing of travel restrictions with Cuba ever since the US President Barrack Obama announced plans to restore normal relations with the communist country.
According to the New York Post, the direct flights via a Boeing 737 were arranged by tour operator, Cuba Tour Service who managed to sell all 140 seats. While the ticket prices are a bit on the high side ($ 849 one way ticket) the service have received mostly positive response from business and leisure travelers who had to endure a day lay off at Miami before proceeding to Havana.
President Obama's December 2014 announcement to restore diplomatic ties with the island nation after 60 years of sanctions and hostility has opened up a lot of business opportunities for both Cuba and the US. While normal relations between the two countries would take time, the opening of direct flights from New York is huge step in that direction.

The relax travel rules for Americans travelling to Cuba is limited to certain cases but nevertheless most tourists and travelers don't have to secure permits from federal agencies such as the Treasury Department.
