Palcohol, an alcoholic drink in powdered form, was given the go signal by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Bureau with the approval of its product labels according to a news release from Lipsmark LLC, the Arizona-based manufacturer of Palcoholic.
The Food and Drug Administrastion (FDA) has stamped its seal of approval despite the strong objections by Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) in April last year. The senator called the product very dangerous and fears it may become the “Kool-Aid of teenage binge drinking”
The company hopes to start selling Palcohol as early as this summer but it would need to secure approvals at the state level which won't be easy. Several states have already made moves to ban the product citing high potential for abuse (snorting the product instead of drinking, easy access to kids, etc.).
In a video posted on Youtube, Palcohol founder, Mark Philips answered most of the criticisms thrown at the company and it's product. You can watch the video below:
Powdered alcohol isn't a new thing. According to Smithsonian Magazine, a japanese company Sato Foods started selling a form of powdered alcohol as a food additive since the 1970s. German (Subyou), Dutch (Booze2Go) and US (Pulver Spirits) companies have also their own versions of powdered alcohol for sale to consumers.
The company is also developing powdered alcohol for commercial, medical and industrial applications which will be non-ingestible.
