Lee Kuan Yew, the man who transformed a backward former British port and trading station into one of the world's strongest economies, died early morning Monday after a month-long bout with pneumonia. Mr. Lee was 91 years old.

Born of immigrant Chinese parents, Mr. Lee shepherded the city-state's rise from the time it gained self-rule from the British in 1959, its break from the Malaysian Federation in 1965 up to 1990 when he stepped down as Prime Minister in 1990.

Singapore's transformation under Mr. Lee's strong hand, from a third world society into one of the wealthiest countries has been studied and even copied by other leaders with mixed results.
